Traditionally, storks in the district of Minden-Lübbecke bred in the 20th century only north of the Wiehengebirge. From private initiatives, nesting sites were also built south of the Wiehengebirge from the year 2000. In Tengern, a 12-meter-high nesting aid has been created from an oak trunk since 2010. In 2012, the first brood was already successful in Tengern. The young stork could be provided with a ring of the ornithological station Helgoland and could be recognized in January 2014 in the region of Madrid, i.e. 1,624 km away from Tengern.
