Lehmkapelle Bodelschwingh

Built in the 1940-ies, the forest chapel lay dormant until its renovation in 2022. The felling of trees, caused by the bark beetle infestation in the Wiehengebirge, brought the clay chapel to light again. On the grounds is the private cemetery of the family of the "clay pastor" Gustav von Bodelschwingh, who died in 1944, and some of his family members. Gustav von Bodelschwingh had discovered the earthen building method in Africa and introduced and made it known in the local region in the period after World War 1. Thus the "Dünner-Lehmbrote-Bauverfahren" was developed, with which building became possible for everyone. At that time, family members, together with children from the village, had built the small forest chapel using this construction method.
